PKRA/Cabarete Banreservas Kiteboarding Worldcup 2003

2003 PKRA CABARETE FREESTYLE DOUBLES EVENT ENDS FULLY CHARGED - WITH EXTRA AMPERAGE!

(June 28, 2003-Cabarete, Dominican Republic)- The usual suspects showed up sporadically to prepare for the showdown of talents, all vying for a coveted chance to move up and dethrone the holder of First Place from the Freestyle Singles ladder. Winds promised, and delivered, in sometimes gusty 18-28 knot winds, slightly tamer than the over 30 knot gusts the day before.
Starting off in the third round of the Men's Doubles ladder, Mark Shinn UK wasn't able to hold off Jeremie Eloy FRA, and Steve Kellner UK had to concede to Abel Lago ESP.

Daphnee Laliberté (Canadian living in Cabarete)

The action switched over to round 2 for the Women, where Kristin Boese GER overtook Petra Goeschl NED. Julie Gilbert-Prochaska USA ran a strong heat, but was not enough to hold back wildcard Daphnee Laliberte CAN. The greatly improved Andrea Wharry UK was unable to overcome the European Champion Fabienne D'Ortoli FRA. And, consistent Claire Bunton UK managed to fend off Sandrine Maunier FRA.

Abel Lago (Spain)

Back in round 4 for the Men, Jaime Herraiz ESP squeaked by the powerful Malik Bouchenafa FRA. Dominican favorite, Luciano Gonzales, had to step aside for Will James USA. Compatriot Etienne Lhote FRA stood aside for Jeremie Eloy FRA to pass through. And, Mark Doyle USA sealed the deal against Abel Lago ESP with his polished technical moves.

Kristin Boese (Ger)

Round 3 for the Women found Boese GER making the advance past Laliberte CAN, and Bunton UK making her signature thrust forward, passing by D'Ortoli FRA.

As the Men's ladder advanced towards the Quarterfinals, Herraiz ESP was enabled an advance by James USA, as Will struggled with a downed kite. Frenchman Eloy was not able to match the forging ahead "Dengue" Doyle USA.

The Women's Quarterfinals found Boese GER stopping the newly back on Tour Wolthers USA, and in a familiar pair up, it was Kollbichler AUT this time leaving behind Bunton UK.

Jaime Herraiz (Spain)

For the Men's Quarterfinal, young Hadlow UK had to swallow a bitter pill as Herraiz ESP managed to advance over him. As well, the waiting Brouwer NED had to let the now primed Doyle USA by.

The Semifinals for the Women, found Kollbichler AUT on a common march to get a chance at Mosey NZL, and she took down, an up till now, forward moving Boese GER.

The Men's Semifinals witnessed Herraiz ESP having to settle for a typical Fourth Place, as Doyle USA finally penetrated the Top Four.

Then, Tour newcomer and DR ripper, Suzanne Mai DR, stopped Kollbichler's AUT bid for the Finals, holding on to her 2nd Place ranking.

For the Men's climb to the Finals, Doyle USA was finally denied entry by a very fluid Andre Phillip ANT.

Martin Vari (Arg)

In the Women's Finals, Cindy Mosey NZL rode a very solid heat, pulling out her bag of tricks and experience, to put an end to the rumor, that she might finally be beat by Mai DR.

It wasn't over in the Men's Finals by far! As if shadow boxing, Phillip ANT and Vari ARG danced the dance of dances- each throwing sensational move, one for the other, leaving the packed beach audience with wonder as to who would miss a beat first. But, it was not to be, and the Judges were given a tough decision. Perhaps just to be certain, the vote was cast for Phillip ANT, necessitating a rematch to take down the First Place holder, Vari ARG.

Andre Phillip (Ger)

Now, the second dance was underway, yet this time the now standing, over anticipating crowd, was given a rare performance of wills, with Phillip ANT clearly getting the better of the heat, as a downed kite inside left it impossible to catch up for Vari ARG. The crown was passed, for now, to a deserving Phillip ANT.
The largest Press and Media flock yet, converged on the winners, just as the sun was mellow and the Caribbean music played on, and on....
